The fifth-generation Prius is no longer slow
The Prius redesign that arrived for 2023 erased the model's slow-and-frumpy reputation. The hybrid system now produces about 194 horsepower with front-wheel drive and 196 horsepower with all-wheel drive — roughly a 60 percent power increase over the previous generation. Toyota quotes 0 to 60 mph in about 7.0 seconds, which is in the same neighborhood as many turbocharged compact sedans. The lower, wider stance, sharper steering, and reworked suspension also make it noticeably more engaging to drive. Buyers who dismissed the Prius five years ago should re-test the current car before deciding.
