The flat-four engine and chassis philosophy
The GR86 uses Subaru's 2.4L FA24 naturally aspirated flat-four producing 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. The flat (boxer) layout sits low in the chassis, which keeps the center of gravity low and contributes to the car's near-50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. Curb weight is roughly 2,800 lbs, light enough that the modest power figure feels appropriate to the chassis. The result is a sports coupe that prioritizes balance, steering feel, and throttle predictability over outright pace. It is a deliberately analog driving experience in a class where most competitors have moved to turbocharging.
